MEGA PIXEL’S “SOUNDS OF AU SABLE” sample pack provides a vast array of field recorded organic audio mixed, processed drum machines, and a combination of both. Utilizing the sounds of the secluded Northern Michigan wilderness and Au Sable River, the pack provides a creative selection of layered drum sounds, percussion loops, running rivers, walks in the forest, and other unique sounds found around the Ed Rivet Lodge, home to the production of the “Au Sable” EP.

THE STORY.
EP IN THE MAKING.
In the summers of 2017 and 2019, MEGA PIXEL wrote and produced their second EP, “Au Sable”. The majority of the writing and production took place at the Ed Rivet Lodge, a secluded cabin on the banks of the Au Sable River in Northern Michigan. Much of the inspiration for the EP was drawn from the writing environment. In an effort to sonically represent the surrounding wilderness, the production team decided to use field recordings of nature to give the EP an organic depth that really conveyed the inspiration of pure secluded creativity.
THE INSPIRATION.
After recording hundreds of minutes of audio using a Tascam handheld recorder, the production team sorted through the raw recordings to find sounds that complement the EP’s production. The Au Sable and Ed Rivet Lodge landscape complements the indie pop production. Employing organic sounds layered into driving percussion, providing ambient depth, and increasing melodic intrigue, give the EP a unique sound that expresses the vibes of the production environment and creates a cohesive listening experience
NATURE’S SONG.
Since the lodge is secluded from much of civilization, the surrounding calmness created a silence that most people are not used to. If you listen close enough in an environment like this, you realize that Mother Nature has her own song. Devoid of the sights and sounds of modern society, the lodge provided a sense of a meditative creativity. The cool Michigan breeze awakens the mind, cold and pure water refreshes the body, while the vastness of nature inspires creativity. This experience compelled the team to feel an obligation to sonically invoke these emotions and teleport the listeners to Michigan so they could have the same experience while listening.
SOUNDS OF AU SABLE.
While producing “Au Sable”, the team realized that the sounds of the Au Sable environment was the vibe of the EP. The vast majority of all percussion came from foley recordings and samples taken from a hardware Roland 808 Drum Machine. The diversity of characteristics that came from layering the recorded samples provided a sonic toolbox that promoted unbridled creativity. MEGA PIXEL decided that compiling sounds that gave “Au Sable” its unique sound could be useful to other artists, producers, and sound designers. Further producing samples, loops, and foley recordings, the team packed the sounds of Au Sable into a single sample pack that embodied the essence of the EP and Northern Michigan wilderness.
